NSW Premier's Reading Challenge 2012

Our school is very proud of our participation in the Premier's Reading Challenge.  ‘The Challenge aims to encourage in students a love of reading for leisure and pleasure, and to enable students to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely.'

Each year, the Challenge runs from 1 February to 1 September and schools register during March. Every student at our school is enrolled in the Challenge and will be given encouragement and opportunity to complete it.

The reading lists for the Challenge are organised into year levels K-2, 3-4, 5-6 and 7-9. Each child has the opportunity to read at a higher level if they so choose.

Students go to ‘log on' and enter their DET user name and internet password. They then go to ‘student reading records' to add books. The Premier's Reading Challenge can also be accessed by students from the DET portal.

Book Week – Children's Book Council of Australia

Book Week is the longest running children's festival in Australia. Each year, many schools and public libraries from all over Australia spend time celebrating books and Australian authors and illustrators.

In our school the children participate in a book parade during Book Week. We also have a Book Week competition for all students and we enjoy reading and studying the books which are shortlisted for the Children's Book Council of Australia awards.

These Book Week activities take place in term 3. In addition, throughout the year we go to literature festivals and plays and invite authors and performers to our school.

MS Readathon

Each year a number of our students participate in the MS Readathon. They can approach family and friends for sponsorship for the number of books they read in any 30 days in June, July or August. Students can include the books that they read for the Premier's Reading Challenge in those 30 days.
